What is music therapy through The Listening Program?
Excerpt taken from www.advancedbrain.com: The Listening Program® is not like any music you’ve heard before. It’s more than music, it’s music that works; to improve your mental, physical and emotional health. For more information, visit: http://a.advancedbrain.com/video_library.jsp#iXMJIyN3f-0
Using the highest audio quality recording technology (High Definition sound) and advanced neuroacoustic techniques, TLP music is acoustically modified to train your brain, strengthening neurological pathways to improve your ability to learn, communicate, and process information. TLP can benefit most anyone, and applications are wide ranging, from rehabilitation, to wellness and peak performance; in settings ranging from schools, hospitals, therapy clinics, assisted living facilities, companies, athletic and music programs, in homes, and on military bases. |
The science behind the therapy.
The Listening Program, originally developed in 1999, is based on a combination and integration of neuroacoustics together with the art of the music involved and been found to impact the waves of the brain and various lobes of the brain based on how it has been put together by the developer and musicians. What is neuroacoustics? It is the unique combination of the frequency of the vibrations, amplitude of the sounds, timing of the music and our biological rhythms, and space or sound localization, i.e.: from where you hear it and the impact that combination of variables has on our perception of sound and the impact of that on the brain. You can see that the musicians and conductor together with the arrangers and sound engineers are all important to the music that is played as they impact every one of these factors.
How do we know this? The topic of music and the brain has been researched for decades, and a simple search of Google Scholar brought up 1,310,000 articles. The research confirms the above, and there has also been independent research of The Listening Program by others (see https://advancedbrain.com/the-listening-program-research/ for some of the studies done if you like to read research studies). Even the military has studied the program enough to allow reimbursement for some services through Tricare Echo for some issues including for sleep and other issues. Who will it help?
We are currently focusing on those with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury as well as individuals with mood disorders, sleep problems, specific cognitive issues post-concussion, and cancer treatment related issues. However, it has proven effective with a number of other conditions so please contact us with any questions you may have.
To note, these treatments are used at my discretion and may at times only be offered in conjunction with those receiving therapy here. |
Why should I do it?
Cognitive skills, auditory processing, fine motor skills, and anxiety left from mTBI can be helped using this method. We consider using this program when individuals have utilized speech therapy, occupational therapy, and/or physical therapy and are still struggling with issues.
What does the therapy consist of?
An assessment is conducted by Dr. Beth, typically including an intake, a review of medical records if applicable, and two hours of testing to ascertain the program is a good fit and to have a way in which to monitor your progress. The Listening Program is based on your specific needs and is used in your own home. Therapy is as simple as listening to this specialized music in a quiet, uninterrupted environment for a prescribed amount of time and number of sessions. It may also be used in the moment while trying to relax, stretch, and sometimes while playing.
How much time does it take?
Generally very little time is needed 5 of 7 days a week. The in-depth The Listening Program, takes 15-30 minutes once or twice a day. We work with what fits for your lifestyle. These programs can be used while trying to fall asleep, relaxing, stretching, or doing some relaxing play. Other resources, like Sound Health and Music for Babies, are available to use throughout the day. The music may be listened to help you focus on an activity such as trying to fall asleep, concentrate to do work or homework, write a report, or relax.
